Established in 2013, the School of Advanced Materials and Nanotechnology (SAMN) is a research-driven institution dedicated to innovation in materials science and engineering. Professor Wang Zhonglin, a foreign member of the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) and a world-renowned nanoscience and nanotechnology expert, serves as the Honorary Dean. Professor Hao Yue, a CAS member and a leading figure in semiconductor science and technology, was the school’s founding Dean and now chairs the Academic Committee. Under their leadership, SAMN is committed to becoming a world-class institution, cultivating top-tier talent, and driving advancements in science and technology.
SAMN has a faculty of 89 full-time members, 58% of whom have overseas research and educational experience at prestigious institutions, while 53.93% are under 35 years old. The faculty includes one national teaching master, 12 national-level distinguished scholars, 20 provincial-level experts, and 29 HUASHAN scholars. Centered on the advancement of electronic materials, the school has established four major research directions:
•Self-driven intelligent systems and sensing
•Semiconductors and information materials
•Coating and thin-film materials and devices
•New energy materials and electrochemistry
SAMN houses a postdoctoral research station in Materials Science and Engineering and operates multiple provincial and municipal research platforms, including the Xi’an International Science and Technology Cooperation Base, Shaanxi Provincial Key Laboratory, Xi'an Key Laboratory, Shaanxi Engineering Technology Research Center, and industry-academia joint laboratories.
To support cutting-edge research, SAMN established the Center for Material Characterization and Device Fabrication, equipped with state-of-the-art facilities. The school's research is funded by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, national key R&D programs, and fundamental research projects under the "Two Engines" special program, with annual research funding of approximately 70 million RMB.
SAMN is actively expanding its global presence. The school initiated and hosts the International Conference on Advanced Materials for Energy and Information Technology, attracting leading researchers worldwide. Faculty members engage in cutting-edge collaborations with international scientists, supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China’s International Cooperation Program. The school's research achievements have been recognized with prestigious awards, including:
•Second Prize of the National Science and Technology Progress Award
•Second Prize of the National Teaching Achievement Award
•Special Prize of the China Youth Science and Technology Award
•First Prize of the Provincial Natural Science Awards
SAMN’s disciplines in "Materials Science" and "Chemistry" rank in the top 1% globally by ESI. The school offers doctoral and master’s programs in Materials Science and Engineering, as well as a master’s program in Materials and Chemical Engineering. Its undergraduate program in Materials Science and Engineering is a national first-class program, tracing its roots to the Radio Component and Materials program established in 1960—one of the earliest undergraduate programs in electronic materials and components in China. The school currently offers three specializations:
•Electronic Information Materials
•Smart Materials and Structures
•Materials Intelligent Technology
SAMN enrolls 801 students and implements a well-structured mentorship system for undergraduates, including the Shi Changxu Electronic Materials Elite Class. The school follows a talent development framework centered on "Academic Planning" and guided by "Career Planning." Over the past five years, the undergraduate employment rate has reached 98%, with 50% pursuing further education. Meanwhile, postgraduate employment has consistently remained at 100%.
