The Physical Education Department of Xidian University is primarily responsible for public physical education teaching, cultivation of sports professionals, construction of sports disciplines, mass activities, sports competitions, physical fitness tests for university students, management of sports venues and other tasks. In 2017, it was approved to grant master's degrees in the first-level discipline of sports science. In 2021, it was approved to set up an undergraduate major in sports training with big data characteristics. In 2018, it was approved to establish scientific research institutions such as the Shaanxi School Sports Informatization Research Base, the Zhongnan Mountain Wushu Research Center, and the Youth Sports Literacy Research Center. In 2019, the high-level cheerleading team of Xidian University was designated as the national cheerleading training team by the General Administration of Sport of China and the National Cheerleading Committee.
The Physical Education Department currently has 73 faculty and staff members, including 59 full-time teachers, 7 management personnel and 7 venue maintenance workers. There are 5 professors, 35 associate professors and 20 lecturers. Among the teachers, 8 have doctoral degrees, 2 have completed their postdoctoral studies, 1 is a doctoral supervisor and 10 are master's supervisors. There are 2 Teaching Masters of Xidian University, 2 international referees and 9 national referees.
In recent years, College Physical Education has been approved as a provincial-level resource-sharing course; and the department has for the first time won the Shaanxi Virtual Simulation Teaching Experiment Project and the provincial excellent teaching material award. It has received more than 50 scientific research funds, including those from the National Social Science Fund, the Social Science Fund of the Ministry of Education, key projects of the General Administration of Sport of China, the Shaanxi Social Science Fund and the Shaanxi Natural Science Fund. It has published more than 300 papers in total, among which more than 70 are in core journals; 9 papers have been presented at international academic conferences; it has obtained more than 10 utility model patents; and 14 teaching materials and monographs have been compiled and published.
At present, sports competitions at Xidian University are led by two high-level sports teams in swimming and aerobics. At the same time, relying on various sports clubs, many sports teams composed of non-physical education students have been established and trained throughout the year, achieving many excellent results in various national and provincial competitions. In 2022, basketball, tennis, and acrobatics teams of the undergraduates majored in sports training were added. Xidian's Physical Education Department attaches great importance to stimulating college students' awareness of active participation in sports competitions, cultivating students' group cohesion and teamwork spirit, focusing on creating a sports culture festival with various sports competitions such as the university sports meeting, campus mini marathon, "Xijundian-Cup" competitions and university students' physical fitness test sports meeting as the main carriers, which lasts throughout the year, striving to achieve the goal of all university students participating in the competition.
In the process of promoting the informatization of education in the university, Xidian's Physical Education Department makes full use of the university’s characteristics and advantages of electronic information, relying on the Shaanxi School Sports Informatization Research Base of the university to focus on building an "artificial intelligence + sports" benchmark university. By building intelligent sports venues and adopting various methods such as face verification and teacher intervention, it ensures that each student exercises at least 4 times a week (including 1 club class), realizes the precise supervision, management and assessment of students' daily sports participation, and guides students to develop good exercise habits and healthy lifestyles.
The sports work of Xidian University actively promotes the internationalization process. The high-level cheerleading team of Xidian University represented China to visit Australia and won the laurel of the flower ball dance event in the college group of the Cheerleading All-Star Game. Meanwhile, scholars from the United Kingdom, the United States, Belgium, and other countries have paid visits to Xidian for academic exchanges for many times. The university’s swimming team and 5 physical education teachers have successively been to the United Kingdom and the United States for academic visits, refereeing and sports competition learning and exchanges. Many teachers went overseas to participate in international sports academic conferences and give keynote speeches.
